Space-Based Solar Power Global Constellation
SPECULATIVE
Space-based solar power (SBSP) collects solar energy in geostationary orbit — where sunlight is constant, unfiltered by atmosphere, and available 24 hours per day — and transmits it to Earth via microwave or laser beam. A single 2km-diameter SBSP satellite in GEO delivers approximately 2 gigawatts to a ground receiver. A constellation of 1,000 such satellites delivers 2 terawatts — comparable to current global electricity consumption. The enabling technologies are converging: reusable heavy-lift launch reducing orbital delivery costs, lightweight photovoltaic arrays, phased-array microwave transmitters with beam-steering accuracy sufficient to hit a 10km ground receiver from 36,000km altitude, and robotic on-orbit assembly. ESA and JAXA both have active SBSP research programmes. The critical threshold is launch cost below $500/kg, which Starship may achieve before 2030. The civilisational implication: clean, continuous, location-independent power delivered anywhere on Earth with a ground receiver, eliminating the geographic lottery of terrestrial renewable resources.
